The idea of a work trial is nice. I think things should work pretty seamlessly, if certain areas like comp are causing issues from the start it's not a great sign.
100% – The comp thing can get people really riled up before anything else or any repor is established which is why I argue to put it towards the end. If people are motivated by money only, then it's really not a great sign!
I'd like to add creating a prenup and partner/operating agreement early on given that a founder breakup is usually a company killer is a good thing.
also your weaknesses should be complimented with their strengths, and while you don't need to be friends, you need to have comraderie as if you are the best of friends -- this does mean you really *should* hang out in the beginning to make sure that values match.
